SUMMARY:ATL Collective Relives Sade’s Lovers Rock + Other Sade Classics
DESCRIPTION:Let the sounds of Sade’s Lovers Rock surround you. This is the British band’s fifth album\, released in November of 2000. It followed (after eight years of waiting\, and lots of critical scrutiny) Love Deluxe. In those eight years\, Sade had her first child and several of the band members began working with Maxwell on his debut\, Urban Hang Suite. The title of Sade’s album Lovers Rock gets its name from a more romantic style of reggae that Sade was influenced by as a child\, and the album blends this sub genre of reggae with folk\, soft rock\, soul and R&B. The arrangements are sparse. Gone are the saxophones. Acoustic guitars loom large. The lead single\, “By Your Side” received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance but lost out to Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird.” The band went on a massive release tour for the album (billed by some as a comeback tour\, as they hadn’t played live for nearly seven years at that point)\, and after the tour\, Sade released her first live album: Lovers Live. Recorded in France and the Bahamas\, the album wasn’t quite the smash hit that her debut and sophomore releases were\, but still it went multi-platinum. As the BBC review put it\, Pride is “a confident\, post-fame release\, full of infectious\, hushed musical sophistication\, making it impossible to dislike.” Though there are surges of increased energy at times on this album\, the tone is primarily subdued\, confident\, and cool\, without obvious attempts at pop hooks. Sade’s voice is\, as always\, the prime captivator\, smooth and sultry\, with the arrangements allowing her to speak without having to raise her voice. The Nigerian-born\, English-raised artist has long seemed to avoid the limelight and is known to distrust the media. Her music speaks for itself and does so by drawing you ever closer. DESCRIPTION:Hot Buttered Soul is a tribute to the music of Isaac Hayes and Stax Records. In the spirit of shows like\, Motown The Musical\, Smokey Joe’s café and Memphis\, HBS is a high energy\, choreographed trip down memory lane to the roots of soul music and the sounds born in Memphis\, TN.  \nIn 1962 Isaac Hayes auditioned for Stax records and by 1964 became a vital part of the house band that would be so crucial to the label’s sound. He\, along with his writing partner David Porter would go on to craft many of the label’s biggest hits and perform the backing tracks on most of the others. The duo\, along with Steve Cropper\, Donald “Duck” Dunn\, Al Jackson\, Jr. and Booker T Jones were collectively known as the “Big Six” within the walls of Stax and were (either as a group or in various combinations) responsible for producing almost all of the label’s output from about 1963 through 1969. \nIn 1972 Hayes was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song for\n“Theme from Shaft”. He became the third African-American\, after Sidney Poitier and Hattie McDaniel\, to win an Academy Award in any competitive field covered by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He also won two Grammy Awards that same year. Later\, he was given his third Grammy for his music album Black Moses. \nThe show treats the audience to a ringside seat as they witness the beginnings of the era that made Stax records and Memphis the epicenter of soul music during the 60’s and 70’s. DESCRIPTION:Dave Potter is quickly becoming known as a formidable musician. He has performed with many well-known jazz artists and recorded 3 albums with Jason Marsalis. Following his graduation from Florida State University in 2005\, he was chosen from a national pool of applicants to be a member of the Louis Armstrong Quintet at the University of New Orleans. Unfortunately\, the tragedy of hurricane Katrina temporarily ended his hopes for a career in Louisiana. In the spring of 2006\, Dave was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Julliard Jazz Program in New York City. However\, after several days of intense meditation he declined the offer and returned to Florida State University\, where he received his Master’s Degree in the winter of 2008 after further collaboration with his mentor Marcus Roberts. In 2010\, Potter was featured in a novel entitled “The New Face of Jazz” about the younger generation of Jazz musicians making an impact in the current scene. Dave is now located in Atlanta where he maintains a busy teaching and performing schedule while also touring the globe as a member of The Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet. \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows.
