SUMMARY:Lilac Wine
DESCRIPTION:Starting May 25th\, Lilac Wine will perform at Venkman’s every Thursday beginning at 7:30pm! Admission is FREE! Dinner reservations can be made at www.venkmans.com (see “Reservations”)\, or by calling 470-225-6162. \nLilac Wine is best described as a sweet and heady musical recipe. The main ingredients are unexpected song choices\, skillful musicianship and adventurous arrangements that magically combine into music that both alluring and hypnotic for the listener. \nFor Rob Henson\, founding member and bassist\, Lilac Wine provides the ideal ensemble that can passionately play many musical genres other than the typical jazz and folk styles most commonly associated with acoustic groups. \nAs one of Atlanta’s most versatile musicians\, Rob has played and/or recorded as a bass player with a wide array of musical groups including the Yacht Rock Revue\, the Atlanta Symphony\, Telegram\, the Atlanta Opera Orchestra\, Jukebox Fiasco\, the Atlanta Ballet\, and numerous singer-songwriters such as Shawn Mullins\, David Ryan Harris and Vince Gill. From 2006 – 2012 Rob recorded and toured the United States with singer/songwriter Corey Smith\, playing over 150 shows a year\, as well as recording five studio albums\, and opening for legendary acts such as ZZ Top\, Willie Nelson\, Cheap Trick\, Snoop Dog\, and Eric Church. \nIn late 2013\, Rob recruited first-call guitarist\, singer\, arranger\, and multi-instrumentalist Grant Reynolds to be the Swiss army knife of the future Lilac Wine lineup. Relocating from LA to his hometown of Atlanta in 2008\, Grant has worked with many respected local music artists including Heather Luttrell\, Brian Collins Band\, Gareth Asher\, Davin McCoy\, Lefty Williams Band\, Francisco Vidal\, Sonia Leigh\, and Yacht Rock Schooner. Known for his technical proficiency\, adaptability\, and well-rounded musicality\, Grant also co-founded the electrifying Reynolds & Williams Band with Joel Williams (former Zac Brown Band guitarist)\, and has most recently toured and recorded with Collective Soul frontman Ed Roland’s new endeavor\, “Ed Roland & the Sweet Tea Project.” \nUnlike Grant and Rob\, Larissa Mia is new to the professional music scene and Lilac Wine is her first band. As recently as a year ago\, Mia did not sing in public\, only for herself at home. Then she made a personal leap to singing at open mic events\, which is where Henson and Reynolds found her. The two musicians were immediately taken with her voice that sounded so soulful it was like like mist on a cool damp night. \nMark Gresham\, reviewing for on July 23\, 2014 at Lilac Wine’s debut concert at Steve’s Live Music commented\, “Her buoyant\, often sultry voice comes with a remarkable natural musicianship\, an ease of phrasing and infection with spot-on intonation\, meshing beautifully with the playing of her seasoned colleagues.” \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows. For seating at a FREE show\, please make reservations for the appropriate time at www.venkmans.com (see “Reservations”)\, or by calling 470-225-6162.

SUMMARY:EARLY SHOW: Joe Baia
DESCRIPTION:Originally from New York\, Joe’s set brings an upbeat rhythm to an eclectic variety of popular covers and original songs. He grew up on classic rock and 90’s bands – and with segues ranging from The Black Keys to Prince\, or The Beatles to Dr.Dre/Snoop Dogg – his influences are apparent as you enjoy his set. His knack for imitation captures many of the distinct elements in the covers he plays\, and Joe’s feel for the room can captivate patrons of many different musical tastes. SUMMARY:Atlanta Funk Society
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta Funk Society is a Funk band from Atlanta\, GA\, playing classic hits from the ’60s\, ’70s and ’80s\, including everything from “Superbad” by James Brown\, to “Whatcha Gonna Do For Me” by Chaka Kahn. \nStarted in the summer of 2010\, the Atlanta Funk Society brought together a collection of some of the best musicians Atlanta had to offer. Founding members guitarist and vocalist Rob Lane (the Apostles) and bass player Kevin Scott (Col. Bruce Hampton\, and others too numerous to mention) wanted to fill the need for a hard hitting funk band playing classic hits from the 60’s\, 70’s and 80’s. \nTheir first call was to Jonathan Lloyd(Cadillac Jones\, Lloyds Rocksteady Review)\, local trombone player and vocalist to put together the horn section which has included Deniz Felder\, Jason Collier\, Jon Marett (Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings\, OutKast\, Goodie Mob)\, Prof. Eric Fontaine (just about every great band in Atlanta)\, and Taylor Kennedy (Soulphonics\, Blair Crimmins). Next to join were guitarist Nick Johnson(Last Waltz Ensemble\, Pharoh Gummitt) and drummer Duane Trucks(Derek Trucks\, Pharoh Gummit) lending their unrivaled musicianship to the group. The keyboards were manned by Florida transplant and first call pianist Nick Rosen. Scotty Bryan (Cinetrope\, 3052 dub Collective) stepped up the bands’ vibe with the addition of percussion. \nThe next critical piece was a female vocalist\, and after a long search\, Michelle Marshall came into the fold and showed what was up. The last piece was additional percussionist Yaya Brown to provide the perfect complement to Scotty Bryan and complete the driving rhythms of AFS. \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nPurchasing a General Admission ticket does not guarantee a seat/table. \nAdditional reservations are not required if booth\, table\, or banquette tickets have been purchased via Ticketfly. \nPLEASE NOTE: If earlier dinner reservations are made\, your seats are not guaranteed for the show. For example\, you cannot reserve a table at 7:00pm and keep it for a 9:30pm show. The only way to guarantee a seat for the show is to purchase booth or banquette tickets. \nReservations for the Captain’s Room (private dining room) can be reserved for parties of 12-20 guests. For more info call 470-225-6162.

SUMMARY:Chicken Pickin' Brunch w/ La Terza Classe
DESCRIPTION:To travel in Terza Classe is another story! The under decks of the transatlantic ships\, in the period between the end of the 800 and the 900\, were a crossroad of people and cultures heading to the same horizon of changes and freedom. Through the music\, these migrants\, changed in joy the suffer of the long journey on board to create a “new world” in society and also in music\, as the appalachian bluegrass shows. \nThis is the spirit that give the soul to this group of “music players”\, coming from different styles and experiences. La Terza Classe plays and sings a lot of stories\, some of outlaws and rebellion from slavery\, with the typical sound of the area that goes from Europe to the Louisiana\, passing through the Appalachian Mountains and the Delta of Mississippi. The sound\, full acoustic\, reminds the decks of the big ships\, or the sound of the street bands in the cities where folk\, blues and early jazz melted. \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows. For seating at a FREE show\, please make reservations for the appropriate time at www.venkmans.com (see “Reservations”)\, or by calling 470-225-6162.

SUMMARY:Kermit Ruffins & The Barbeque Swingers
DESCRIPTION:“We Partyin’!” \nKermit Ruffins needs only two words to hype a New Orleans barroom for one of his weekly shows\, and this\, his personal slogan\, sums up what this Big Easy ambassador is all about. \nFrom playing himself in the HBO Series Treme\, to barbecuing outside his bar\, Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge\, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, the trumpeter/vocalist keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world. He personifies the laid-back vibe of New Orleans. \nBut he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He watched videos of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway until the tape wore out\, cut his teeth busking the streets of the French Quarter\, and apprenticed on stages with local legends “Uncle” Lionel Batiste and Danny Barker. \nConsider his lengthy musical career. While still in high school\, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band – a group that revolutionized the brass band community in New Orleans with songs like “Do Watcha Wanna” that have become anthems. Rebirth’s growth and success bolstered the rejuvenation of the New Orleans second-line culture that now flourishes. \nStill\, after less than a decade fronting the band and touring the world\, Ruffins tired of the road. He missed the culture at home so much that he traveled\, like fellow New Orleans icon Fats Domino\, with cooking equipment and prepared his favorite foods in hotel rooms far and wide. \nHe made a bold and risky decision to leave Rebirth and go solo\, having no guarantees the public would embrace his new direction. At the time there were very few young musicians playing traditional jazz. Nearly all the backing musicians on his first album were decades older. \nNow\, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are a beloved institution – a must-see for every music lover. As he’d helped spur the formation of new brass bands in his 20s\, he’s since influenced the NOLA’s musical direction in the 21st century. Dozens of young musicians and bands are essentially playing the same music Ruffins pioneered with his solo act. They sing into retro microphones\, dress in dandy suits and perform the timeless tunes that defined a decades-past era. \nYet Ruffins has not been content to remain musically static. His live show has included elements of hip-hop since his days with Rebirth. He began rapping on albums long before it was commonplace for jazz musicians to have hip-hop influences. \nIt’s not the first time he’s taken musical chances. He had a short-lived progressive jazz band that experimented with arrangements of songs from the 1970s. His 2009 album\, Livin’ A Tremé Life\, included a version of Johnny Nash’s monster 1972 hit “I Can See Clearly Now.” It also had songs reflecting Ruffins’ deep roots in the R&B of the Crescent City\, like Allen Toussaint’s “Holy Cow.” \nIn the ’90s\, Ruffins fronted a big band with arrangements from great maestro Wardell Quezergue. He stocked the band with superior local musicians and the performances were on par with great bands of the ’40s\, updated to reflect Ruffins’ effervescent personality. His 2010 release\, Happy Talk\, revisited that territory with a full horn section and sumptuous arrangements of tunes like “If I Only Had a Brain” (from The Wizard of Oz) and the Louis Armstrong hit “La Vie En Rose.” \nWith over fifteen albums to his credit including live albums capturing his inimitable stage presence (1998’s The Barbecue Swingers Live and 2005’s Live at Vaughan’s)\, a collaboration with his Rebirth Brass Band brethren (2005’s Throwback)\, a holiday album (Have A Crazy Cool Christmas [2009])\, an homage to New Orleans’ traditional jazz (We Partyin’ Traditional Style! [2010])\, and the party-anthem packed #imsoneworleans (2015) the New Orleans trumpeter shows no signs of slowing down. \nEvery year Ruffins ebullient attitude and love of his hometown music firms his reputation as the New Orleans idol. Dedicated to preserving and passing on the tradition of jazz\, he is often compared to his own hero\, Louis Armstrong. \nOn his likeness to “Satch” Kermit says\, “That’s someone who really\, really led one of America’s true art forms. He was really the cherry on top of New Orleans music. And now I see it being passed on to younger kids\, and for me to have a role in that and to maybe do the things he did is so spiritual to me.” \nWhether he’s slinging barbecue\, adding to his collection of fedoras\, or playing at one of his regular weekly shows\, Kermit Ruffins does it with joy and passion. It’s an attitude befitting of any true New Orleanian\, and it can be summed up in two simple words: We Partyin’! SUMMARY:Bottomless Mimosa Brunch w/ The Tray Dahl Jazz Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Purists Beware! Tray Dahl & The Jugtime Ragband is not jug band\, ragtime\, or dixieland. It is an energetic amalgamation of all three immersed in an early New Orleans sound with a style that also incorporates a little blues\, a bit of swing\, and some old time gospel tones. We get people’s feet stomping in a roaring twenties kind of way. Our sound has been described by many as “speakeasy” or “prohibition era” music. Our songs match the early New Orleans jazz/blues instrumentation combo of tenor banjo and trumpet with upbeat dixieland and swing tempos underlying a heavy dose of powerful 1920’s inspired vocals stylistically akin to Bessie Smith\, Clara Smith\, and Louis Armstrong. Our main influences include Louis Armstrong and the Boswell Sisters. We play songs composed by some of the best songwriters from the early and mid-twentieth century alongside our original tunes which are heavily influenced by their work. Our songwriting style consists of writing stories that take listeners back in time through the experiences of our main characters whose tales\, so far\, have taken place anywhere from the 1860’s to 1930’s. \nRESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows.
SUMMARY:Chicken Pickin' Brunch w/ Dusty Roads
DESCRIPTION:Dusty Roads is a high-energy Georgia-grown Americana band\, formed by Atlanta based musician\, J.L. Mickelson. When you’re at a Dusty Roads show\, expect to hear influences of the legends of country and bluegrass music\, such as Merle Haggard\, Flatt & Scruggs\, Willie Nelson\, Buck Owens\, and Bill Monroe. You can also expect sprinklings of songs and sounds of the great writers and musicians from across the globe and halls of time\, like Django Earnhardt\, Duke Ellington\, and Irving Berlin. “Come take a trip\, down that long\, dusty road”. \nComprised of some of the Southeast regions finest pickers and singers\, the band is ever evolving and growing. They’re constantly searching for that sound\, that lick\, that twangy hook that sinks deep into the listener’s soul and pulls them into the unfolding story of each song. Dusty Roads cherishes the purity of silvery steel strings ringing together harmoniously. The band champions comradery\, respect for the craft of their instruments\, and finely constructed songs that feel as if they soar down from the mountaintop to resonate the listener’s heart-strings. \n“We came here with one purpose\, to have a blast playing and performing live acoustic music”- J.L. Mickelson\, singer/songwriter for Dusty Roads. Growing up in Atlanta\, Mickelson was surrounded by a diverse world of cultures and music his whole life. “My great-grandfather was a mandolin player from Germany\, so I guess it just runs in the blood”\, says Mickelson of his musical lineage. Like a rear-view mirror in a pick-up truck\, Dusty Roads looks back through the history of written and recorded music\, studying fervently to decipher just what made each of these classic songs so special and unique. Just like ‘looking backwards to go forwards’\, Mickelson applies this approach to writing original material for the band. \nDuring the Winter of 2015\, Dusty Roads went into the studio to begin recording its debut self-titled album. Due out in the Spring 2016\, the album will feature all original music inspired by life\, love\, heartache. “Life is heavy\, but music can make your bags a little lighter” – J.L. Mickelson \nTICKETING/RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows.
