SUMMARY:Bottomless Mimosa Brunch w/ The Tray Dahl Jazz Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Purists Beware! Tray Dahl & The Jugtime Ragband is not jug band\, ragtime\, or dixieland. It is an energetic amalgamation of all three immersed in an early New Orleans sound with a style that also incorporates a little blues\, a bit of swing\, and some old time gospel tones. We get people’s feet stomping in a roaring twenties kind of way. Our sound has been described by many as “speakeasy” or “prohibition era” music. Our songs match the early New Orleans jazz/blues instrumentation combo of tenor banjo and trumpet with upbeat dixieland and swing tempos underlying a heavy dose of powerful 1920’s inspired vocals stylistically akin to Bessie Smith\, Clara Smith\, and Louis Armstrong. Our main influences include Louis Armstrong and the Boswell Sisters. We play songs composed by some of the best songwriters from the early and mid-twentieth century alongside our original tunes which are heavily influenced by their work. Our songwriting style consists of writing stories that take listeners back in time through the experiences of our main characters whose tales\, so far\, have taken place anywhere from the 1860’s to 1930’s. \nRESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows. For seating at a FREE show\, please make reservations for the appropriate time at www.venkmans.com (see “Reservations”)\, or by calling 470-225-6162.

SUMMARY:EARLY SHOW: TJ Edmond
DESCRIPTION:T.J. Edmond was born in Detroit\, but grew up in the mountain towns of Colorado and the South Carolina Lowcountry. He spent a snowy winter in Rochester\, New York working at a music store\, where he’d lock up the store at the end of the day and spend all night in the basement writing songs and recording demos\, before deciding to pursue music and move to Atlanta in 2004. His music\, like his accent\, comes out like a familiar\, if hard to pinpoint\, amalgamation of influences North\, South\, East and West. \nWith comparisons to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers\, Ryan Adams\, Counting Crows\, and Johnny Cash\, he writes vivid and honest songs that could be rock\, pop\, Americana\, country or blues\, but they are always about the story. In 2005 he formed the roots/rock powerhouse\, The Beggars’ Guild\, in Atlanta. The band recorded two CD’s \, received modest radio play in Atlanta and NYC and landed slots opening for Zac Brown Band\, Marshall Tucker Band\, Dierks Bentley\, and Drivin’ ’n’ Cryin’. After an eight year stint in Athens\, and nearly as long a hiatus from performing\, he returned to Atlanta and reformed the band in 2016 while also performing the occasional solo show. \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows. SUMMARY:PUPPET BRUNCH! Billy Goats Gruff & Other Stuff
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Little Red Riding Hood has a first name? Learn her name in David Stephens’ production of Billy Goats Gruff and Other Stuff. \nIn this one-man performance utilizing hand\, rod\, and glove puppets\, Stephens retells classic fairy tales as well as telling a few of his own original tales. You’ll see what happens when three billy goats try to cross over a bridge belonging to a greedy troll in The Three Billy Goats Gruff. \nParker Pig encounters some good luck when he stumbles over a watering can in The One Little Pig and the Three Wishes; a retelling of a family favorite. \nOne of Stephens’ original stories\, The Two Farmers\, involves Farmer Frick and Farmer Frack and how they learn to work together to make a pot of stew. \nAll this\, plus the antics of some silly chickens\, in Billy Goats Gruff and Other Stuff. \nDeveloped for Alabama Public Libraries‚ Summer Reading Programs\, this show has entertained both children and their parents. The Center for Puppetry Arts hosted an 8-week run of over 100\, virtually sold-out\, performances of this production in 2002. Since then\, the Center has hosted two equally successful revivals in 2004 and 2007. In 2005\, this show was honored by receiving a Citation of Excellence from UNIMA-USA (Union Internationale de la Marionette): the equivalent of an Oscar in the puppetry world. \nTICKETING/RESERVATION INFO\nYour ticket serves as your brunch reservation. Additional reservation arrangements are not necessary once ticket is purchased. If you have special seating requests/needs\, please call 470-225-6162.

SUMMARY:The Deer
DESCRIPTION:With the sort of ingenuity you might expect to come out of Austin\, TX\, The Deer encompasses the innovation of the modern indie-folk revival and the cross-pollination of Austin’s diverse music scene. Described as transcendental Texas folk and stargaze surf-western\, The Deer creates psychotropic soundscapes and tranquil\, vivid dream-pop. In 2016’s release\, Tempest & Rapture\, The Deer marry their brand of moody Americana with rapturous psychedelia\, like two wings of one soaring bird. What began as the solo recording project of singer/songwriter Grace Park (The Blue Hit)\, The Deer formed its core membership in 2012 after the release of An Argument for Observation under the band name Grace Park & The Deer. For their second album\, On the Essence of the Indomitable Spirit (2015)\, their name was shortened to The Deer to represent the cohesive collaboration between all of the artists in the band\, and because the group especially identified with deer as a symbol of protective guidance. Their music is like a beacon in the dark wilderness: shining of pure melodies\, vivid images\, and strong musicianship in a world of vapid ditties. \nOriginal members include upright bassist/songwriter Jesse Dalton (MilkDrive)\, guitarist/sound engineer Michael McLeod (Good Field\, Richard Linklater film composer)\, drummer/pianist Alan Eckert (Dimitri’s Ascent)\, and Park. Together they combine the Southern Gothic soul they’ve had all along with new cross-genre inspiration: analog tape and reverb effects by engineer/assistant producer Grant Johnson\, vocals and piano by Roger Sellers (Bayonne)\, pedal steel by Lloyd Maines\, as well as the expert string stylings of both Dennis Ludiker (Asleep at the Wheel) and The Deer’s newest member\, Noah Jeffries (MilkDrive\, South Austin Jug Band)\, who adds orchestration to live shows. With Tempest & Rapture\, The Deer has created a dynamic collection of songs ranging between the blissful and euphoric to the dark and the dangerous. Rooted in surreal folk and Southern gothic as much as transcendental surf-rock\, The Deer moves fluidly between genres\, eliciting emotion as varied and surprising as Tempest & Rapture implies.\nThe Deer have played Austin’s historic Moody Theater and the Legendary Stubb’s\, as well as festivals like Kerrville Folk Festival\, Old Settler’s Music Festival\, Utopiafest\, and Oregon Country Fair. Members have shared the stage with Alejandro Escovedo\, Peter Rowan\, Tony Rice\, Tim O’Brien\, and Dana Falconberry. Their co-bill roster includes Elephant Revival\, Trout Steak Revival\, Hot Buttered Rum\, Jeff Austin\, and more. They are currently writing music for their upcoming fourth album to be released in the late spring of 2017.
