SUMMARY:Kermit Ruffins & The Barbeque Swingers
DESCRIPTION:“We Partyin’!” \nKermit Ruffins needs only two words to hype a New Orleans barroom for one of his weekly shows\, and this\, his personal slogan\, sums up what this Big Easy ambassador is all about. \nFrom playing himself in the HBO Series Treme\, to barbecuing outside his bar\, Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge\, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, the trumpeter/vocalist keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world. He personifies the laid-back vibe of New Orleans. \nBut he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He watched videos of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway until the tape wore out\, cut his teeth busking the streets of the French Quarter\, and apprenticed on stages with local legends “Uncle” Lionel Batiste and Danny Barker. \nConsider his lengthy musical career. While still in high school\, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band – a group that revolutionized the brass band community in New Orleans with songs like “Do Watcha Wanna” that have become anthems. Rebirth’s growth and success bolstered the rejuvenation of the New Orleans second-line culture that now flourishes. \nStill\, after less than a decade fronting the band and touring the world\, Ruffins tired of the road. He missed the culture at home so much that he traveled\, like fellow New Orleans icon Fats Domino\, with cooking equipment and prepared his favorite foods in hotel rooms far and wide. \nHe made a bold and risky decision to leave Rebirth and go solo\, having no guarantees the public would embrace his new direction. At the time there were very few young musicians playing traditional jazz. Nearly all the backing musicians on his first album were decades older. \nNow\, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are a beloved institution – a must-see for every music lover. As he’d helped spur the formation of new brass bands in his 20s\, he’s since influenced the NOLA’s musical direction in the 21st century. Dozens of young musicians and bands are essentially playing the same music Ruffins pioneered with his solo act. They sing into retro microphones\, dress in dandy suits and perform the timeless tunes that defined a decades-past era. \nYet Ruffins has not been content to remain musically static. His live show has included elements of hip-hop since his days with Rebirth. He began rapping on albums long before it was commonplace for jazz musicians to have hip-hop influences. \nIt’s not the first time he’s taken musical chances. He had a short-lived progressive jazz band that experimented with arrangements of songs from the 1970s. His 2009 album\, Livin’ A Tremé Life\, included a version of Johnny Nash’s monster 1972 hit “I Can See Clearly Now.” It also had songs reflecting Ruffins’ deep roots in the R&B of the Crescent City\, like Allen Toussaint’s “Holy Cow.” \nIn the ’90s\, Ruffins fronted a big band with arrangements from great maestro Wardell Quezergue. He stocked the band with superior local musicians and the performances were on par with great bands of the ’40s\, updated to reflect Ruffins’ effervescent personality. His 2010 release\, Happy Talk\, revisited that territory with a full horn section and sumptuous arrangements of tunes like “If I Only Had a Brain” (from The Wizard of Oz) and the Louis Armstrong hit “La Vie En Rose.” \nWith over fifteen albums to his credit including live albums capturing his inimitable stage presence (1998’s The Barbecue Swingers Live and 2005’s Live at Vaughan’s)\, a collaboration with his Rebirth Brass Band brethren (2005’s Throwback)\, a holiday album (Have A Crazy Cool Christmas [2009])\, an homage to New Orleans’ traditional jazz (We Partyin’ Traditional Style! [2010])\, and the party-anthem packed #imsoneworleans (2015) the New Orleans trumpeter shows no signs of slowing down. \nEvery year Ruffins ebullient attitude and love of his hometown music firms his reputation as the New Orleans idol. Dedicated to preserving and passing on the tradition of jazz\, he is often compared to his own hero\, Louis Armstrong. \nOn his likeness to “Satch” Kermit says\, “That’s someone who really\, really led one of America’s true art forms. He was really the cherry on top of New Orleans music. And now I see it being passed on to younger kids\, and for me to have a role in that and to maybe do the things he did is so spiritual to me.” \nWhether he’s slinging barbecue\, adding to his collection of fedoras\, or playing at one of his regular weekly shows\, Kermit Ruffins does it with joy and passion. It’s an attitude befitting of any true New Orleanian\, and it can be summed up in two simple words: We Partyin’! \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nPurchasing a General Admission ticket does not guarantee a seat/table. \nAdditional reservations are not required if booth\, table\, or banquette tickets have been purchased via Ticketfly. \nPLEASE NOTE: If earlier dinner reservations are made\, your seats are not guaranteed for the show. For example\, you CANNOT reserve a table at 7:00pm and keep it for a 9:00pm show. The only way to guarantee a seat for the show is to purchase table\,booth\, or banquette tickets. \nReservations for the Captain’s Room (private dining room) can be reserved for parties of 12-24 guests. For more info call 470-225-6162.

SUMMARY:Chicken Pickin' Brunch with Dusty Roads
DESCRIPTION:Dusty Roads is a high-energy Georgia-grown Americana band\, formed by Atlanta based musician\, John Mickelson. When you’re at a Dusty Roads show\, expect to hear influences of the legends of country and bluegrass music\, such as Merle Haggard\, Flatt & Scruggs\, Willie Nelson\, Buck Owens\, and Bill Monroe. You can also expect sprinklings of songs and sounds of the great writers and musicians from across the globe and halls of time\, like Django Reinhardt\, Duke Ellington\, and Irving Berlin. “Come take a trip\, down that long\, dusty road”.\n Comprised of some of the Southeasts finest pickers and singers\, the band is ever evolving and growing. “We’re all Georgia boys” says Mickelson of the band members\, which features Jared Lanham on mandolin and tabla – the traditional Indian hand-drum. “Colt Bowen has one of the lightest touches of any drummer in town” says Mickelson of the Dusty Roads drummer. Fiddlin’ phenom Danny Bermel joined the group in late 2016\, and adds an agile musical flare that pushes their musical crescendos to another level of fever-pitch. Dusty Roads is constantly searching for that sound\, that lick\, that twangy hook that sinks deep into the listener’s soul and pulls them into the unfolding story of each song. The group cherishes the purity of silvery strings ringing together harmoniously. The band champions comradery\, respect for the craft of their instruments\, and finely constructed songs that feel as if they soar down from the mountaintop to resonate the listener’s heart-strings.\n “We came here with one purpose\, to have a blast playing and performing live acoustic music”- says Mickelson\, singer/songwriter for Dusty Roads. Growing up in Atlanta\, he was surrounded by a diverse world of cultures\, food\, and music. “My great-grandfather was a mandolin player from Germany\, so I guess it just runs in the blood”\, says Mickelson of his musical lineage. Like a rear-view mirror in a pick-up truck\, Dusty Roads looks back through the history of written and recorded music\, studying fervently to find just what made each of these classic songs so special and unique. Just like ‘looking backwards to go forwards’\, Mickelson applies this approach to writing original material for the band.\n During the Winter of 2017\, Dusty Roads went into the studio to begin recording its debut self-titled album. The album will feature music inspired by life\, love\, and heartache. “Life is heavy\, but music can make your bags a little lighter” – Dusty Roads \nTICKETING/RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows. SUMMARY:Yacht Rock Revue UNPLUGGED
DESCRIPTION:You’re welcome! The Yacht Rock Revue™ is the Greatest Show on Surf and the finest tribute to ‘70s light rock to ever perform anywhere. Ever. Their spot-on renditions of Hall & Oates\, Michael McDonald\, Steely Dan\, and the rest of the Time-Life Infomercial Catalog have enthralled fans across the United States. It goes without saying they have taken their act to the high seas\, performing showcase sets on music cruises with Weezer\, Kid Rock\, Train\, Zac Brown Band\, Sister Hazel\, and fitness guru Jillian Michaels. \nBy blurring the lines between a tribute\, an original act\, and a comedic troupe\, the Yacht Rock Revue™ has forged a unique niche market and a special bond with their fans. The band attacks each song as if it were their own\, and the energy exchanged between the band and the crowd has more in common with a stadium U2 show than that of a typical bar band. \nThe band has won accolades ranging from “Best Place to Get Drunk With Your Dad” to “Best Overall Music Act in Atlanta” to “Best Place to Start an Extramarital Affair\,” and has been name-dropped by the New York Times\, Pitchfork\, the Guardian UK\, Spin\, TimeOut New York\, Billboard\, MTV.com\, and (probably) your mom at her last cocktail party. \nSpeaking of name-dropping\, members of the band have played on-stage with members of Weezer\, Billy Joel\, Walter Egan\, .38 Special\, John Mayer\, Zac Brown Band\, Little River Band\, Sheryl Crow\, Noel Gallagher\, Starbuck\, Sarah McLachlan\, Don Henley\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Neil Finn\, Jellyfish\, Devo\, Nine Inch Nails\, Joan Jett\, Wet Willie\, Bon Jovi\, Skid Row\, and the Saturday Night Live Band. (None of those were a joke.) \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nPurchasing a General Admission ticket does not guarantee a seat/table. Bar area seating is reserved on a first-come\, first-serve basis. \nAdditional reservations are not required if a table\, booth\, or banquette has been purchased via Ticketfly. \nReservations for the Captain’s Room (semi-private dining room) can be reserved for parties of 12-20 guests. SUMMARY:Nina Simone/ Billie Holiday - Remixed & Reimagined LIVE A musical tribute starring Jill Rock Jones
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of great music and Women’s History Month\, Hot Ice LIVE is pleased to present “Nina Simone/ Billie Holiday – Remixed & Reimagined LIVE.” Singer/Songwriter Jill Rock Jones takes the stage with a live band performing songs from two of the most fearless women in Jazz Soul music history. A native of Atlanta\, Jill Rock Jones is a powerful singer/songwriter across Jazz\, Rock\, Soul and House music genres. She has performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival\, the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, Natchez Music Festival\, FunkJazz Kafe\, the ASCAP Rock Convention\, Las Vegas Casinos and the Jazz Super Club Circuit in Shanghai\, and Hongjhou\, China. In addition to performing in the company of Jazz greats like Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd\, she has also released music with global house music producers DJ Kemit and Daz-I-Kue from Bugz In The Attic (UK). \nNina Simone was born February 21\, 1933 in Tryon\, North Carolina. She was trained at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. She took on the name Nina Simone to hide from her parents that she was performing jazz and blues music in local nightclubs. She would go on to record more than 40 albums gaining popularity in the 1950s. During the 1960s\, her music was impacted and infused with activism inspired by the 1963 Birmingham\, AL church bombings and the death of civil rights worker Medgar Evans. \nNicknamed Lady Day\, Billie Holiday was born in Philadelphia in 1915 on April 7. After a rather turbulent childhood\, she began performing in Harlem Jazz Clubs. From the 1930s – 1940s\, her career began to rise to mainstream success. Well-respected for her musical tone and her lyrical content\, Holiday would collaborate and record with a series of jazz heavyweights including John Hammond\, Lester Young\, Benny Goodman\, and Count Basie. After a long struggle with drug and alcohol abuse\, Holiday died in 1959. She documented her trials in her autobiography “Lady Sings The Blues\,” later turned into a film starring Diana Ross\, Billy Dee Williams\, and Anthony Perkins. \nJill Rock Jones will channel the iconic Nina Simone and Billie Holiday with contemporary renditions of their top hits interwoven with her own original music. \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nPurchasing a General Admission ticket does not guarantee a seat/table. SUMMARY:Spoon Fed Radio Hits Acoustic Style by Michael Magno
DESCRIPTION:Please join us the The V for an acoustic evening of music filled with all of your 70s and 80s radio hits with Michael Magno. Reservations available at Venkmans.com (RSERVE) \nMagno – derived from the Latin adjective magna\, meaning “of greatness”…
Somewhere in the definition\, Michael Magno inherited the drive to become a serious singer/songwriter. Spoon-fed his influences by radio-loving parents\, Michael wrote his first song at age 14 and never looked back. \nBy today’s standards\, you can compare him to such contemporaries as Bruno Mars and OneRepublic\, with a smooth vocal reminiscent of Sting or Marvin Gaye. In 1998\, the Florida native transplanted to Atlanta and began performing his originals solo acoustic or with the his band\, MAGNO. He quickly gained popularity at such venues as Eddie’s Attic\, Smith’s Olde Bar and other music rooms around Atlanta. His sound is an organic blend of rock and soul\, with an undeniable pop sensibility. \nDrawing inspiration from coffee and 80’s radio\, Magno’s songs are a personal invite into familiarity. His songs convey broad takes on love and hope\, while letting his listeners embrace the lyrics in their own singularity. Live performances showcase Magno’s natural abilities: lucid vocals\, comfort on guitar and piano\, an alluring demeanor and boy-next-door smile. With every show\, Magno continues to draw a growing fan base\, validating his stride as a serious songwriter and performer. Find him on Facebook\, Twitter and Instagram @mrmagnomusic \nTICKETING & RESERVATION INFO: \nTickets are not available for FREE shows.
