Event Navigation

In celebration of great music and Women’s History Month, Hot Ice LIVE is pleased to present “Nina Simone/ Billie Holiday – Remixed & Reimagined LIVE.” Singer/Songwriter Jill Rock Jones takes the stage with a live band performing songs from two of the most fearless women in Jazz Soul music history. A native of Atlanta, Jill Rock Jones is a powerful singer/songwriter across Jazz, Rock, Soul and House music genres. She has performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, Natchez Music Festival, FunkJazz Kafe, the ASCAP Rock Convention, Las Vegas Casinos and the Jazz Super Club Circuit in Shanghai, and Hongjhou, China. In addition to performing in the company of Jazz greats like Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd, she has also released music with global house music producers DJ Kemit and Daz-I-Kue from Bugz In The Attic (UK).

Nina Simone was born February 21, 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina. She was trained at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. She took on the name Nina Simone to hide from her parents that she was performing jazz and blues music in local nightclubs. She would go on to record more than 40 albums gaining popularity in the 1950s. During the 1960s, her music was impacted and infused with activism inspired by the 1963 Birmingham, AL church bombings and the death of civil rights worker Medgar Evans.

Nicknamed Lady Day, Billie Holiday was born in Philadelphia in 1915 on April 7. After a rather turbulent childhood, she began performing in Harlem Jazz Clubs. From the 1930s – 1940s, her career began to rise to mainstream success. Well-respected for her musical tone and her lyrical content, Holiday would collaborate and record with a series of jazz heavyweights including John Hammond, Lester Young, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie. After a long struggle with drug and alcohol abuse, Holiday died in 1959. She documented her trials in her autobiography “Lady Sings The Blues,” later turned into a film starring Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Perkins.

Jill Rock Jones will channel the iconic Nina Simone and Billie Holiday with contemporary renditions of their top hits interwoven with her own original music.
