Event Navigation

Born April 2, 1939, Marvin Gaye wooed audiences worldwide and shaped the sound of Soul Music. Known as The Prince of Motown, Marvin Gaye’s career started with his love of Jazz music and as a member of male singing groups in the 1950’s. Joining Motown subsidiary Tamla Records in the 1960’s began his career as a songwriter, session drummer, and collaborator with artists including the Marvelettes, Mary Wells, The Miracles, Tammi Terrell, and Dianna Ross. From the late 60’s through the 70’s and into the 80’s, Gaye produced a series of chart- topping hits including “What’s Going On,” “Mercy Mercy Me,” “Trouble Man,” “Got to Give It Up,” and “Sexual Healing.” After recording his concept albums “What’s Going On” and “Let’s Get It On” in the 1970’s, Gaye became one of the first artists at Motown (along with Stevie Wonder) to break away from the company.
